I had done this research with updates and decided to share since there is plenty of talk with deep valley playoff runs. I am 99% sure I have all the deep runs in valley history but if I'm missing one don't chop my head off just please share. Once you see this you see that while not many deep runs in history have been made, we still have plenty of accomplished teams out there.

The titles don't always match how many playoff rounds played.
I could agree with you , but then we'd both be wrong.

Win one game and your a semi-finalist, win three games and you don't get out of your region.

Very true greenblood guess just depended on the structure of that classification at that time.

Even go to a similar time...….89 Harlingen 3-playoff wins and didn't get out of Region.
90 Mission 3- playoff wins Region Champion

No thank you for the appreciation. Information was gathered using as many primary sources as possible and took some time to build up but did it for the love of the game.

State Finals PSJA 0 Corsicana Tigers 7

Played in a rinky-dink 2a stadium, with open-air type bleachers, on a frigid, freeze your everything, day.
The defenses were in control, and the Tigers scored on a fake field goal which proved to be the game winner.

During the "Golden Age of Valley Football" (1960's) where the RGV saw several state finalist and semifinalists, the demographics of the RGV was very different and so was the rest of the State of Texas. During the mid to late 60's and into the early 70's, something happened that thrusts the RGV into the abyss as far as the game of football is concerned. Anybody want to take a stab at what that was?

Were the demographics of the RGV really "very different" from today? Had a few aunts and uncles graduate from Weslaco HS in the 1970's. One of them still has a Weslaco HS class of 1970 yearbook that's cool to look through every few years. I'd guess the school was maybe 10% white back then, vs it being about <4% white today. That's not an insane difference over almost 50 years.

Reason #2 is the number of Hispanic students. You said the 70’s had similar numbers to today. Try looking at those of the 60’s.

Not in Harlingen, when more and more barrios boys started playing football the wins and playoffs wins started coming in. Sammy Garza, Freddy Paredes and Freddy Cavazos best QB's in Harlingen history.

Id say the demographics in many towns back in the 60s and 70s were more than 10% whites back then. Id guess maybe 30% or more in some schools. But to answer the underlying question. The valley teams of those eras were more ethically diverse than they are today. At least the ones that made noise back then. I know the valley has grown by a whole bunch since I left which begs the question. Is the population getting bigger because of people move in from other areas? Or is it birth rates and migration from the south? Because if it were people moving in from other areas and states, the population in turn should be getting more diverse.

I remember looking at an old Port Isabel yearbook from the 1960s and I was amazed at the number of white kids. Almost seemed like 40% white, 60% hispanic back then. Nowadays it's like, 90-95% hispanic. IMHO, it's definitely immigrants coming from the south. There are, occasionally, new move ins who are white, but the vast majority are retirees wanting to spend their retirement years living on South Padre Island, or Long Island Village in PI whose kids have long since graduated from high school & college.

My sister graduated from Donna High back in the 70's and I recall looking at her yearbooks and even Donna had a bunch of white kids and even some black and asian kids. I think the numbers started dwindling in the 80's? Other schools in the mid valley like Weslaco had the same.

The truth is as it was back then, the RGV is not retaining people after they graduate from high school IF they tend to go to college away from the RGV. I know many of my sister's friends and classmates from back then fall into that category and it seems like the ones that stayed in the RGV were either people who had family businesses they decided to take over one day or got married or joined the military right out of high school and decided to comeback home to establish roots. And of course people that got government related jobs like in law enforcement because you could back then as you can right now in most cases have a good standard of living on the GS scale down there compared to many areas in the nation. Back in the day, some of the best homes were owned by long time employees of the Postal Service or Customs where I lived.

I live out of the RGV and have for going on a third decade now. I find myself at times wanting to go back, but then when I do go back for a visit, it seems like a different world than what it was two decades or so ago. I know one thing I do hear from people up state who have tried to go down there as an outsider or even as a returning native of the area is it seems like a closed society down there and preference is given to locals first. I mean you can present your valley credentials and all of that, but you still get pushed to the side if someone else is competing for business or a job.
