Default Meet of Champions 2014 (Boys/Girls Results)

Wanted to start a thread where we can post results from this years MOC's, and definitely wanted to give a shout out to the Weslaco High Girls Mile relay team that broke a MOC's record tonight that went back 33 years (1981) and is also now a new valley's best time. Also as a Team won the Meet of champions for the 3rd year in a row which is also a great accomplishment in itself considering their going up against the valleys best. These girls have been on quite a tear, they've won every meet they've participated in so far this season (4), dominated the Moc's again and are going to be in the hunt to win a 3rd straight District Championship. Congrats Girls

New meet records, new valley records set at the MOC

WESLACO — La Joya Palmview’s Felipe Valencia and Sharyland’s Richard Cervantes have been pushing each other in throws all season. On Saturday at the Meet of Champions, they nearly pushed each other to Rio Grande Valley records.

Valencia posted a mark of 64 feet, 5 3/4 inches in the shot put, the third-best mark in Valley history. Cervantes threw the discus 188-4, the fourth-best mark in Valley history. Valencia finished second in the discus, and Cervantes finished second in the shot put.

“It makes us both better,” Cervantes said of their competition. “It makes him throw farther, and it makes me throw farther. It’s just better competition. I was telling some of the guys from up North that I have the best competition down here, because of Felipe.”

Both seniors, Valencia and Cervantes have been competing against each other since junior high. Valencia said he and Cervantes often talk to each other at meets, where they consistently end up 1-2 on the podium.

“With us two being one of the top in the Valley all time, we’re just giving each other support and trying to go for (personal records) every single meet,” Valencia said.

    VAULTING THE RECORD

As soon as Harlingen High pole vaulter Hayden Flores hit the pad, he bounced up and went to hug coach Ray Deleon. His jump of 16 feet, 1 inch was the third best in Valley history.

“It was totally unreal,” Flores said. “I felt like I was dreaming. I didn’t really know. It was hard to process what was going on. It was just a great feeling.”

Although he usually likes to pole vault away from the spotlight, all eyes were on Flores by his final attempts. Before each try, fans would clap to try to fire him up. But Flores approached the vault with laser-like focus, returning to his red folding chair after each attempt and hardly speaking to anyone. The balance of trying to rest up while simultaneously keeping his energy high enough to perform proved to be a challenge, especially when the delay as workers raised the bar approached 15 minutes.

“I think that might have had a little bit of an effect on me, because my adrenaline wasn’t flowing as much as it was on previous jumps,” Flores said.

Flores took three attempts at 16-3, which would have set a new Valley record. The jump required a 15-foot pole, one he had never used before in competition. On the third attempt, he came up just short, clipping the bar on the way by. With more practice on the 15-foot pole, Flores and his coaches believe the record is within reach.

“Oh, definitely,” Flores said. “I really plan on doing it in the next couple of weeks. It’d probably be the best feeling I’ve ever felt in the world. I’m aiming for it now.”

    NEW MEET RECORD

Brownsville Hanna distance runner Juan Uribe had no intention of setting any records in the 3200-meter run. The wind made conditions less than ideal, and he was only concerned with winning the race. He didn’t even wear his watch.

“I never expected I would’ve ran that fast, honestly,” Uribe said. “That’s crazy. I still can’t believe I ran 9:20.”

Uribe’s time of 9:19.99 broke a 32-year-old record held by Aaron Ramirez from Mission High. Second place finisher Michael Guerrero of La Joya (9:22.34) and third place Jose Angel Gonzalez of Sharyland (9:24.70) both finished ahead of Ramirez’ record time.

“I’ve always known that all the records in the meets are really fast, so we’ve never really gone for them, because they’re a little bit too fast,” Uribe said. “I had no idea I could do that.”

Uribe let Guerrero and Gonzalez set the pace early, and although it was the fastest mile pace he’d run, Uribe said he was comfortable. On Uribe’s third try, with two laps to go, he successfully left Guerrero and Gonzalez behind.

“With one lap to go, I knew I had it,” Uribe said. “I could’ve gone faster, and I should’ve. I didn’t know I was going that fast. I was just going for the win. I wasn’t going for records.”

Those Weslaco girls are fast, also impressed with the speed of File Patino from Psja, he has that deceptive speed. Castillo from Donna just dominated the hurdles, he's got a bright future.
