Default 2014 Track & Field Season

2013 was a great year for Track & Field in the RGV, overall 3 state gold champions: Vince Castillo (Donna) 300m hurdles, Felipe Valencia (La Joya Palmview) shot put, Daneilis Murchison (Port Isabel) shot put.
And guess what? They're all three back for more in 2014!

The RGV has established an excellent tradition in hurdles, including taking 5A state gold the past 2 years in the Boys 300m hurdles (Bermea 2012, Castillo 2013). Castillo is back for his junior year, and Roman Hernandez (Harlingen), whom finished 5th in the state last season, is back for more as well. What a treat to see two of the top five hurdlers in the state go at it all season right here in the RGV.

Also, maybe the deepest group of 100m sprinters the RGV has had:
Trevor Speights (McAllen Memorial), Jacquil Evans (Brownsville Rivers), James Cole (Sharyland), Jaedon Taylor (Harlingen), File Patino (PSJA High), among others. Expect some great times, and heated races.
Sharyland, Harlingen, McMemorial should continue to have solid 4x100m squads.

Nine RGV girls signed D1 last season, possibly the greatest accomplishment for the RGV all of last year, in all sports.

I expect Briana DeLeon (Weslaco) to dominate. Many gold medals coming for her in her senior year.
Daneilis Murchison should have another excellent season, going for her third straight trip to the state finals, in only her junior year.
Krysta Martinez (Edcouch-Elsa) ran the fifth fastest time in RGV history in the 1600m run in 2013. She was only a freshman.

What other individuals/teams should we be on the lookout for in 2014?

update on 2 girls from last year:

Cassie Divin (Harlingen/Louisiana Tech) has won her first two ever college heats (500m dash @ UAB Invitational and 400m dash @ Texas A&M Invitational). She is also running on the 4x400m team that is currently ranked as one of the top in the nation.
She is progressing greatly under proper coaching.

Leigha Brown (Edinburg Economedes/U of Arkansas) won the shot put and finished 5th overall in the 60m hurdles and 6th overall in the long jump at her first meet, the Arkansas Invitational.

Two girls with very BRIGHT futures ahead of them, already performing well at the D1 level as true freshman.

You might be right Trouble, was checking out the results from the Carl Lewis Invitational on the 18th of this January and he took a 7the in the 200 yard dash. Did some checking and he had never ran a indoor meet before (200 yard track not banked) and there were kids from all over the state and Louisiana. He stumbled in the 60 yard dash and just missed the final cut.

A 22.93 FAT timed unbanked 200m dash on a 200m track is pretty solid... I hope he plays football next season too...

James Cole showed great potential on the track last year as a sophomore. To see him improved this year and lined up against Jacquil Evans and Trevor Speights should be some great races.

Cole took Speights by 2 tenths at the Meet of Champs. They weren't in the same Area round.
Cole was a sophomore, Speights was a freshman, both are improved. Should be a fun season.

Yeah, I agree, but Shary had so much depth at WR this past season... He figures to be a full time starter next season if he plays...

I guess he means if Cole decides to only focus on Track, which he has a good chance of getting a scholarship in. He should be a big time playmaker for Shary in football if he does play next year, but is it worth risking an injury? Tough question.

Was looking at Sharylands track schedule online (does anyone has info on other schools, hard to see schedules online) but looks like Shary has made the committment to try and get pass Regionals. Two trips to San Antonio before regionals.

Shary has probably the fastest mens track team in the valley.. I don't know how fast they'll be this season because Marco Avila, Estefan Castillo, JC Valadez are all gone, but Shary usually has some up and comers that can really run.... James Cole is the fastest Sharyland kid in a while, I think CJ Cavazos is the only one with faster 100m times, he timed at 10.54 or something like that as a Jr. He also ran in the 21sec range in the 200m, I'm not saying Cole won't be faster, but that is what CJ timed back then..

Haha. They are probably the best. Why? I know they have up and comers.
