Congrats to Randy Bermea for getting 1st place in both 110 and 300m hurdles! He broke the region record in 300m hurdles. I heard he beat the kid that won State last year in 300 hurdles, who is also committed to run track at A&M.

Leigha Brown is headed to State in 100m hurdles, Zariah Noyola is headed to State in 300m hurdles.

several athletes represented the RGV well today.

WESLACO’S WIZ: It took him about 250 meters to finally judge the speed of the rest of the field. But when RC Cervantes came up to the final 150 meters of the 400-meter dash, he knew what he had to do.

"That’s when I kicked it," Cervantes said.

And he went on to win gold in the 400 with a time of 50.04 to advance to state. Cervantes is the second Panther in four years to qualify for the state meet in the quarter mile. The fast Mishak Rivas did it in 2008 as well.

But for Cervantes, winning the race in San Antonio isn’t only about himself and even Weslaco. He sees it as a chance to represent the RGV in Austin and show the track and field world that the Valley has quality sprinters.

"A lot of people talk about the Valley as not being able to get past San Antonio teams in anything. I think we showed here today that we can compete and win. We just have to get up there and compete.

"We (Valley athletes) push ourselves every single day at practice. Now it’s time to push ourselves in Austin and make all the work pays off."
Actually, RC is the third to qualify for the state meet in the quater mile. The trio is Mishak, Jerry and now RC.

Mishak and Jerry went 1-2 a few years ago.

Heard a total of 16 from the Rgv qualified for State (some in double events) making it one of the most successful regional meets for the valley in recent history. Thats pretty awesome
