Weslaco High wins title

WESLACO – The Weslaco
High wrestling dynasty is
back on track .
The Panthers claimed
the boys District 32
championship on
Saturday at Weslaco
East. Along with the Panthers, the San
Benito Lady Greyhounds claimed the girls
championship . For Weslaco and coach Miles
Pederson, it was its first since 2008 when it
claimed the last of eight consecutive district
titles under coach John Glapa.
That undoubtedly made the victory sweeter
for Pederson , who has also coached at
McAllen High .
“It feels real good,” Pederson said. “ It ’ s one
of those things where you’ re part of a
program that has a great history and you
want to get it back to where it was.”
A team that Pederson said is full of
sophomores and juniors did that .

The Panthers got individual titles from Jay
Alvizio at 140 pounds , Kevin Lopez at 160 ,
Andres Sanchez at 171 and Cruz Garcia at
285 . That helped Weslaco dethrone reigning
District 32 champion PSJA High, beating out
the Bears 183 .5- 173 .5 . PSJA Memorial
(120 . 5) and host Weslaco East ( 118 ) also
finished in triple digits.

Pederson said his team ’ s depth was the key
to the victory . To win the district title , the
Panthers needed all eight of their wrestlers
to place. They did, leading to the district
title and momentum heading into the
regional tournament.
